I knew the verdict was coming. I already knew which way it was going to go and I’ve tried to mostly stay off of social media. However, I need to say something because a certain phrase always seems to make its way into the conversation: black on black crime.
We are the only race whose crimes are referred to in this way and that’s no accident. It is purely by design, because stats show most crime is committed within proximity to who you’re around the majority of the time, which is typically your own race. However, you never hear about white on white crime, it’s just crime. Hispanic on Hispanic crime, its just crime, Asian on Asian crime, ect. IT IS JUST CRIME, and there are a number of people who have bought into this outlook.
It is crazy to watch people benefit from white supremacy and not even realize they are being used as its vessel. It has the poorest of white men feeling superior to the richest of black men, because hey at least I’m not black. Institutionalized racism has done a number on so many people, and I’m just not gonna keep putting up with it.
Black folk are not a monolith, no race is. All of us didn’t grow up around violence but those are always the talking points when our voices get “too loud” about police brutality and the constant failings of the justice system. There are and always have been people working in OUR communities to make change, but you will never see that on your TV screens or on social media because that’s not the view they want you to see of us.
Two things can be true. We need change within our own communities, but who doesn’t? Yet we also need to speak out about our black brothers and sisters being killed in the streets by other races and by the police. I’m not gonna stop saying it, and I’ll say it every time it comes up. Let them freaking HEAR YOU!!!
