Go back to where you came from…let’s talk about it

This phrase is often spewed out when someone voices their complaint about the country they live in. We hear it many times when people speak out about injustices they suffer in what has mostly been seen as the greatest country in the world…America. If you don’t like it, go back where you came from. All the while most, including myself are residing right where we came from. Our ancestors may not have been from here, but this is the only home the majority of us have known since birth.

Let’s look at it another way. I can love my physical home (house, apt, etc.) and recognize that there are parts of it that need work. Am I really going to up and leave because I don’t like those parts or am I going to do what needs to be done to fix it? The answer shouldn’t be complicated. Just because things have always been a certain way, doesn’t mean it was right.

As many are finding a voice to express these things that need “work” in our country the easy fix would be to take that advice and walk away. However that doesn’t change or remedy the problems that remain. We’ve got to take the time and start listening to one another in order to make real change. Just because something doesn’t directly affect you, or hurt you personally doesn’t mean it’s not damaging to someone else. It’s time to take a closer look at why there is really such a divide in this country and work together towards true healing.
